ROMANIA EXTENDS CAP ON ELECTRICITY AND GAS PRICES UNTIL THE END OF 2022

The Romanian government has decided to extend for another year the existing cap on electricity and gas prices for households and small businesses, which expires at the end of March 2022. Small businesses will benefit from a special scheme that reduces costs by about 20%. Households consuming up to 1,200 m3 of gas will pay 0.31 Romanian lei/kWh (6.3 euro cents/kWh).

The measure, including support schemes for large companies, is expected to cost 14.5 billion Romanian lei (2.9 billion euros) by the end of 2022; the impact must be partially offset by the revenues from additional taxes on electricity generating companies (excluding thermal power plants) that sell the produced electricity at a price above EUR 90/MWh.
